Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has issued a directive for the immediate restoration of power supply to government offices and facilities in the state.

Additionally, approximately 4,700 pensioners in Abia State have been registered to receive complimentary medical care at both primary and secondary healthcare facilities across the state under the state’s Health Insurance Scheme. These beneficiaries are pensioners who, prior to retiring from civil service, held positions no higher than Deputy Director.

In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko, the Governor took action after being informed of these initiatives by the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo.

Governor Otti expressed concern about the lack of electricity in government offices and facilities, emphasizing that any outstanding bills would be settled to ensure that these facilities have access to electricity. He stated, “We cannot afford to have government offices and facilities without electricity.”

Dr. Okoronkwo briefed the Governor on the efforts her ministry had undertaken to improve various healthcare facilities in the state, particularly the general hospitals in Amachara, Okpuala Ngwa, Umunnato, and a cottage hospital in Aba.

The Commissioner highlighted security issues at these facilities due to inadequate illumination, which made them susceptible to theft. She noted that equipment and valuable resources meant for serving the healthcare needs of the public had been stolen in the past.

To address this security concern, the Commissioner sought assistance from senior government officials, which led to improved security measures at some of the facilities, particularly the General Hospital in Okpuala Ngwa.

As a result of these discussions, the Governor has ordered an enhancement of security, the installation of adequate lighting, and the construction of proper perimeter fencing for these healthcare facilities to safeguard them against unauthorized access.
