Mrs. Olufunke Daniel, the wife of former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, has responded to the demolition of her complex by the state government. Earlier, it was reported that the demolition of her N1 billion five-story building commenced around 3:00 am on Sunday and was carried out by government officials and armed security personnel.
The demolition was allegedly sanctioned by the state government due to the absence of sufficient parking space, muster point, and inadequate airspace.
In response to this incident, Mrs. Daniel, represented by her lawyer Adeyinka Kotoye, SAN, from Page Law Office, confirmed that agents of the Ogun State government demolished her establishment, DATKEM Plaza, located in Ijebu-Ode, during the early hours of Sunday.
Her lawyer stated, “We were surprised and disappointed that the Ogun State government disregarded court documents served on its agents on Thursday, September 7, instructing them to halt all actions regarding the building.”
The statement revealed that on August 1, the Ogun State Planning and Development Authority had sealed the building “without any prior notice.” On August 31, the government issued an eviction notice to the property, demanding that the owner vacate within three days.
Mrs. Daniel clarified that the complex’s management had applied for the unsealing and regularization of the building on August 2, and had paid the mandatory fee of N500,000 to the state government. However, she expressed shock that the Ogun State government proceeded to demolish the structure in the early hours of Sunday, disregarding the on-going legal process. She also raised concerns about the State Attorney General’s advice being ignored.
Emphasizing her intent to seek legal redress, Mrs. Daniel conveyed her substantial losses due to this unlawful demolition. While expressing her belief that Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun might not have been informed about this illegality, she maintained confidence in the government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law. Nevertheless, she declared her determination to continue the fight for justice.
