France’s embassy in Niamey, Niger, announced on Tuesday that they will begin evacuating French nationals from the country very soon. This decision comes after a coup last week triggered anti-French protests in the region.
The embassy sent out a message to French citizens, stating that an air evacuation operation is being prepared due to the deteriorating security situation in Niamey. They mentioned that the evacuations will happen within a limited timeframe while taking advantage of the relative calm in the area.
The foreign ministry in Paris confirmed that the evacuation is being organized and will be executed swiftly. Niger is now the third Sahel country in less than three years, following Mali and Burkina Faso, to experience a military coup. President Mohamed Bazoum was toppled by elite troops from his own Presidential Guard.
All three nations are grappling with jihadist insurgencies that have strained their fragile governments and caused economic hardships in some of the world’s poorest countries.
The removal of elected presidents in these former French colonies has been accompanied by demonstrations that show anti-French sentiments and pro-Russian support.
