In collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Police Reform and Transformation Office (PORTO), the Global Security Sector Reform Foundation (GS-Foundation) has conducted comprehensive training for over 600 police officers focusing on police reforms.
Mr. Tunji Lardner, CEO of PORTO, revealed this in Abuja at the conclusion of the capacity-building training program aimed at strengthening police reforms. The program was executed under the Supporting Police Reform Processes in Nigeria Project, funded by the Federal Foreign Office of the Government of Germany.
Lardner explained that the training, conducted in multiple batches, successfully exposed the police officers to global best practices in andragogy and adult education. It aimed to transition the learning approach from drilling to a classroom-based approach. Additionally, the project renovated and equipped the Central Police Training Unit (CPTU) in Jos, Plateau State, to create a more conducive learning environment for the police.
Furthermore, 66 Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) underwent training, resulting in improved communication regarding reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
Lardner emphasized that this intervention was based on a comprehensive needs assessment carried out in collaboration with GS-Foundation, UNDP, and PORTO. The partnership played a pivotal role in achieving police reform objectives and enhancing the capabilities of officers, enabling them to provide high-quality training experiences aligned with international standards.
The training, conducted in three batches, equipped officers with practical teaching strategies to enhance training at Police colleges and for personnel in all commands and zones. This achievement is part of a broader strategy to modernize cadet training methods, provide leadership development for officers, and sustain ongoing reforms.
Mrs. Annett Günther, the Germany Ambassador to Nigeria, highlighted the importance of training cadets for an effective and modern police force, congratulating the police officers and emphasizing the significance of their successful completion of the training.
Mr. Mohammed Yahya, the Resident Representative of UNDP, underscored the importance of this intervention in promoting police reform and addressing multifaceted security challenges in Nigeria.
The trained officers were selected from various commands across the country, with the last batch consisting of approximately 120 officers trained by a team of Police trainers from GS-Foundation.
