Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, has announced that the 2023 population and housing census, which was previously slated for March 29, has been rescheduled until May 2023.
Lai confirmed this to State House media at the conclusion of the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to the minister, the decision to move the census was required by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponing the gubernatorial and State Assembly elections from March 11 to March 18.
He also disclosed that the council approved N2.8 billion for the National Population Commission (NPC) to purchase software for the census.
“The National Population Commission presented a memo in which they requested software to perform the census in May of this year. I believe they will be unable to begin the census on time due to the postponing of the elections.
“They sought council approval for a N2.8 billion deal to procure software for the census,” he said.
