The Federal Capital Territory Administration and a group of concessionaires have entered into an agreement to resume the “park-and-pay” scheme, also known as On-Street Parking, in Abuja.
In May 2023, the Federal Executive Council approved the park-and-pay policy in Zone A (Wuse II and Utako) with NAJEC Limited as the concessionaire, expecting a revenue of N11.875 billion. Zone B (Maitama and Garki 1) was awarded to Messrs. Automaten Technik Bauman Nigeria Limited, with an expected revenue of N15.05 billion. The combined contract value for each zone is N908.3 billion for a 10-year term.
The agreement was signed by the FCTA Permanent Secretary, Olusade Adesola, who stated that the objective is to promote orderliness and organization, reduce city congestion, and enhance the driving experience. The scheme will provide designated parking lots for motorists, and those violating parking rules will be subject to fines.
Adesola emphasized that the reintroduction of the scheme was done with the consent of the six area councils. However, the implementation will only begin after thorough sensitization and awareness campaigns among residents.
The director of Traffic Management, Transportation Secretariat of the FCTA, Wadata Bodinga, highlighted the increasing population growth in the FCT, leading to congestion and traffic challenges. The park-and-pay scheme is expected to positively impact economic activities, improve customer experience, and promote efficient parking management systems.
The FCTA gazetted the Federal Capital Territory Parking Scheme, 2019, which provides a legal basis for implementing the on-street parking scheme. This initiative aims to enhance safety, security, traffic management, and aesthetics in the urban city while offering a cost-effective solution for accessing parking spaces easily.
The Chairman of NAJEC Nigeria Limited, Nebolisa Igboka, praised the FCTA for reintroducing the scheme, acknowledging its positive impact in the past by restoring sanity on FCT roads and reducing car theft cases. He stressed the importance of striking a balance between modernization and convenience while ensuring the well-being of the community in the evolving urban landscape.
