Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the use of ‘Emilokan’ syndrome or spirit is not a tactic to secure elections and to rule the people of Edo State.
The Governor said this on Tuesday during a visit by leaders from Edo South Senatorial District at the Government House to express solidarity, the governor conveyed his sentiments. He lamented the regrettable and unfortunate situation that has arisen between him and his deputy, highlighting the sadness surrounding it. He emphasized that such a situation could have been avoided, considering the shared history and challenges they have faced.
The governor remarked that the recent events unfolding over the past few months are perplexing. He noted that even if one harbors political ambitions, the present moment is not suitable for their pursuit. He emphasized the inappropriateness of being part of a government while simultaneously destabilizing it.
The governor recalled their initial intention of joining hands and eventually departing as a cohesive unit, allowing the people to acknowledge their achievements and make an informed decision. He stressed the importance of the people’s endorsement in determining the government’s continuity.
He expressed his concern about the conflicting messages being conveyed – proclaiming loyalty to a leader while engaging in legal disputes with the same leader. He acknowledged the right to hold ambitions but underscored the significance of pursuing them in an ethical and appropriate manner.
The governor further discussed the value he places on building institutional strength rather than focusing solely on individual pursuits. He cited the constitutional role of a Deputy Governor and clarified that his collaboration with the deputy was within those boundaries.
Addressing criticisms about granting excessive responsibility to the deputy governor, the governor deflected blame, asserting that the intention was to nurture young talents and groom them for leadership roles. He voiced his lack of regret for providing his deputy with opportunities for growth.
He acknowledged the on-going projects and his commitment to their completion, rather than initiating new endeavours. He underscored the importance of continuity across administrations in order to accomplish meaningful change for the state. He stressed that the experiences of the past have taught them the value of not repeating mistakes, and they are determined to enhance the lives of the people of Edo.
