The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has identified illegal mining and criminal activities as a major threat to the local and national economies through the nonpayment of royalties, taxes, and other obligations.
The assertion was made by the Acting Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Abdulkarim Chukkol, who was represented by the Zonal Head, Mr Micheal Nzekwe, at a Day Workshop organized by the commission for media in Kwara.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the workshop on “Effective Reporting of Economic and Financial Crimes” was held on Thursday at the Ilorin Zonal Command.
The chairman said that cybercrime was a big issue, particularly among undergraduates and fresh graduates.
“The commission has been active in tackling their criminalities and will continue to ensure that existing anti-illegal mining laws are enforced.”
“Our work is engaging because the commission has been combating the menace of corrupt practices for many years, as evidenced by its impressive records of convictions, asset forfeitures, and other tangible proofs of accomplishments.”
“Reporting has also been difficult because our work is not static, and the media has always kept up with our speed and energy.”
“In recognition of these responsibilities, the commission initiated a workshop for journalists on economic and financial crime reporting.”
“The workshop is one of the commission’s modest efforts to build synergy and foster a more engaging relationship with the media,” he said.
The EFCC boss urged Nigerians not to wait until they suffer a loss as a result of economic and financial crimes before taking action against corrupt practices, as they continue to be a threat to individual and corporate success.
“We suffer losses not only as victims of these crimes; we also suffer limitations when our neighbors, colleagues, institutions, and nation fall victim to them.”
“I charge the nation’s journalists with patriotism, because you owe our country and the entire world an obligation to expose all shadiness and criminal acts through reporting.”
“I charge the media to deploy more time, energy, and commitment in exposing all fraudulent activities in our midst,” he stated.
