President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded to the unfolding events in the Republic of Niger, expressing concern about the situation. In a personally written statement distributed to State House Correspondents on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasized that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) strongly opposes any form of political instability in neighboring Niger.
He promptly reacted to reports indicating unfavorable developments surrounding the country’s highest political leadership in Niger. Tinubu made it clear that the ECOWAS leadership, as well as democracy advocates worldwide, will not tolerate any actions that disrupt the functioning of the legitimately elected government in Niger or any part of West Africa.
Tinubu assured that he is closely monitoring the situation and developments in Niger. He further pledged that they will do everything within their power to firmly establish, nurture, and sustain democracy in the region. As the Chairperson of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government,
Tinubu asserted that Nigeria stands firmly with the elected government in Niger. He conveyed the resolute commitment of regional leaders to defend and uphold constitutional order, in adherence to universally accepted principles of constitutionalism.
