The special delegation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has conducted a meeting with the coup leaders in Niger Republic. The delegation, led by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), includes the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray.
Dispatched by President Bola Tinubu, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, the delegation was given a mandate to swiftly address the ongoing political dispute in Niger. This mission aligns with the resolution reached at the conclusion of the extraordinary ECOWAS summit held in Abuja last weekend.
After receiving a briefing from President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, the delegation, headed by Gen. Abdulsalami, departed for Niamey on Thursday.
Additionally, President Tinubu sent a separate delegation, led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria regarding the crisis in Niger.
During the briefing, Tinubu charged both delegations to engage all stakeholders in a robust manner, seeking a conclusive and amicable resolution to the situation in Niger. He emphasized that the primary concern is democracy and regional peace, and the focus should be on African peace and development rather than adopting geopolitical positions of other nations.
Following the meeting, Gen. Abdulsalami stated that the delegation intends to present the demands of the ECOWAS leadership to the coup leaders in Niger.
