In accordance with Section 1 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP ACT) of 2015, Dr. Abubakar Danraka, a public officer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of rape (sodomy) by an Abuja High Court. The trial judge, Justice A. Akanbi-Yusuf, delivered this verdict after finding the defendant guilty.
Dr. Abubakar, who previously held the position of Chief Pharmacist at the National Hospital in Abuja and served as a Senior Special Adviser (Technical) to the Director of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, was apprehended on March 27, 2020, for sexually assaulting a minor.
Fatima Waziri-Azi, the Director-General of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), expressed her appreciation for the unwavering commitment of the judiciary in ensuring that justice was served. In response to the judgement, she remarked, “I would like to extend special commendation to the judiciary for its consistent cooperation and support in the enforcement of the VAPP law in the nation, culminating in this significant ruling.
This represents a triumph for our country. As we strive to transform Nigeria into a violence-free nation, in collaboration with all our valued partners and stakeholders, we will persistently intensify our efforts to secure more convictions and reduce impunity.”
