There is confusion in Kano regarding a letter from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicating its decision not to participate in the appeal against the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s judgment that removed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The letter, dated October 6 and signed by Suleiman Alkali, the Head of Legal Department at INEC Kano, stated that the commission was withdrawing its appeal because it had no reason to appeal any judgment. The letter was addressed to the secretary of the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
However, after the letter became public, there were reports that it had been withdrawn by INEC. An online newspaper, Solacebace, reported that Alkali had stated that the letter written to the Kano Governorship tribunal had been withdrawn because there was no reason for it in the first place.
Efforts to contact Alkali for confirmation were unsuccessful, as his phone did not connect, and a text message sent to him received no response.
When Daily Trust attempted to get more information on the situation, the INEC head office in Kano was closed as it was the weekend. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Amb Zango Abdu, could not be reached as his phone was switched off.
The Public Relations Officer of INEC Kano, Nahila Bello, mentioned that she was not aware of the development and suggested contacting the legal department for information. However, she also noted that the office was closed on the weekend.
This development occurred shortly after the Kano State governor filed a 42-ground notice of appeal to challenge the removal of his mandate at the Court of Appeal. The Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal had previously sacked Yusuf and declared his opponent, Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the March 18 gubernatorial election.
