The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has stated that it did not order banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 notes, as previously reported.
Mr. Osita Nwanisobi, Director, Corporate Communication, announced this in reaction to media allegations that the apex bank has asked commercial banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 notes.
“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been directed to certain fake and unauthorised messages, quoting the CBN as having authorized the Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 currencies,” he stated.
“For the avoidance of doubt, and in accordance with Mr. President’s statement on February 16, the CBN has been ordered to ONLY re-issue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes, which are scheduled to circulate as legal money for 60 days until April 10.
“Members of the public should, therefore, dismiss any message and/or information not explicitly provided by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject.
“Media practitioners are urged to PLEASE check any information from reliable sources before publishing it.”
