Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, decried the maltreatment of state residents by banks that refused to accept old N500 and N1,000 notes on Sunday.
The Osun State government was informed that commercial banks in the state were denying old currency deposits even after paying consumers with the same old notes.
The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, issued a statement lamenting the people of Osun State’s anguish and suffering as a result of the banks’ actions.
The governor stated that he was aware of the numerous complaints from residents over banks’ refusal to accept old naira deposits and the harmful consequences of such action in society.
“I’ve gotten multiple calls from bank clients around the state. The purposeful unwillingness of banks to collect outdated money is causing major economic difficulties for state people. It is very improper for banks to issue old notes while refusing to accept them as deposits.
“I have accordingly called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to instruct the banks operating in the state to fix the anomalies. “The CBN State Director is explicitly urged to direct the banks to stop this unhealthy practice,” Adeleke added.
Gov Adeleke said that if banks will not take old notes as deposits, they should cease issuing the same old notes for withdrawal.
