Nigerian track and field athlete, Tobi Amusan, has received approval from World Athletics to participate in the upcoming World Championship set to commence this weekend in Budapest, Hungary.
Amusan’s eligibility to compete at the Budapest 2023 World Championships was uncertain due to an ongoing doping investigation. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) had not included her name in the roster for the upcoming event, pending confirmation from the global athletics governing body.
Initially, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) had suspended the 26-year-old athlete for missing three consecutive doping tests. However, she has now been granted permission by the AIU to represent Nigeria in the World Championship. Her case was heard by a jury on Thursday, and she received a favorable ruling.
Amusan achieved a remarkable feat by clocking the fastest-ever time in the hurdles at 12.12 seconds during the semi-final of the women’s 100m hurdles. Although her final time of 12.06 seconds was considered wind-aided, her outstanding performance left the world in awe.
Despite her suspension in July, Amusan remains a formidable contender for the Budapest 2023 competition. Her quest to defend her title was clouded by the suspension, especially considering she had posted a time of 12.34 seconds after a sluggish start to the season.
Nia Ali currently leads the world rankings before the Budapest athletics showcase with a time of 12.30 seconds. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Kendra Harrison hold season-best times of 12.31 seconds.
