The Senate has urged the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other regional leaders to exercise caution in addressing the political crisis in Niger Republic.
Following a closed-door session lasting almost two hours, the Senate discussed a letter written by President Bola Tinubu on the decisions made by ECOWAS regarding the situation in Niger Republic. The Senate recommended that ECOWAS should strengthen political and diplomatic measures, as well as explore other means to resolve the political turmoil in Niger Republic.
While completely condemning the coup in Niger, the Senate praised President Bola Tinubu and other ECOWAS Heads of State for their prompt response and the positions they have taken concerning the unfortunate events in Niger Republic.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read the resolutions of the senators after the meeting. He clarified that President Tinubu’s correspondence did not seek the Senate’s approval for military action, as some had mistakenly suggested. Instead, President Tinubu respectfully sought the support of the National Assembly in implementing the resolutions of ECOWAS, as outlined in the communication.
The Senate called on Nigeria’s President, as the chairman of ECOWAS, to encourage other leaders in the region to strengthen political and diplomatic measures aimed at resolving the political situation in Niger Republic and restoring democratic governance in the country as soon as possible.
The Senate also mandated its leadership to engage with the President and Commander-in-Chief on behalf of the Senate and the entire National Assembly to find the best approach to resolving the issue, considering the longstanding friendly relationship between Nigerians and Niger Republic.
Lastly, the Senate urged the ECOWAS parliament to join in condemning the coup and provide viable solutions for resolving the situation as expeditiously as possible.
