The Ondo State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa. This move to impeach him was initiated during an emergency plenary session held by the House on Wednesday.

The impeachment proceedings are rooted in allegations of severe misuse of office that have been levelled against the deputy governor. It is alleged that Aiyedatiwa engaged in actions that were inconsistent with the responsibilities and expectations of his office.

A total of 23 out of the 26 lawmakers in the Assembly have already signed the impeachment notice against Aiyedatiwa, indicating that the required two-thirds majority has been achieved.

In response to these developments, there was heightened security presence both at the gate of the assembly and within its premises.

The alleged misconduct primarily revolves around the approval of N300 million for the purchase of a bulletproof Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) intended for Aiyedatiwa’s personal use. It is claimed that Aiyedatiwa directed this amount to be sourced from the palliative fund. Notably, this approval was allegedly granted while Governor Akeredolu was recuperating in Germany.

During the proceedings, the Majority Leader, Hon Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, cited Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution to underscore the need to address the deputy governor regarding the allegations before any action could be taken by the House. Tope Agbulu, a PDP lawmaker representing Akoko Southwest 2, seconded this motion.

Consequently, the assembly instructed the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jaiyeola, to draft a letter to Deputy Governor Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, officially informing him of the allegations of gross misconduct that have been levelled against him.
