After spending over 134 days in detention, the Department of State Service (DSS) has released former EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa. Bawa was arrested by the DSS on June 14, 2023, shortly after being suspended from his position as EFCC Chairman by President Bola Tinubu on allegations of office abuse. During his time in custody, the DSS did not formally charge him or specify his alleged offense.
His release coincided with the confirmation of his successor. The Senate recently confirmed Ola Olukoyede as the new EFCC Chairman. Olukoyede is an experienced lawyer with over 22 years of experience, specializing in regulatory compliance, fraud management, and corporate intelligence, with an extensive background in EFCC operations. Muhammad Hammajoda was also confirmed as the Secretary of the anti-graft agency following their appointments by President Bola Tinubu.
In another development, the new EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, directed EFCC personnel to declare their assets in accordance with civil service regulations and procedures.
The declaration of assets will be required for all staff from level 17 and below. Olukoyede emphasized that setting a good example and maintaining transparency is crucial in the fight against corruption. He called on the Commission’s staff to focus on the fundamentals of combating economic and financial crimes, emphasizing professionalism, integrity, and non-partisanship.
