Saint Onitsha Mienpamo, a blogger who operates Naijalivetv.com, has been remanded in Kuje prison following his appearance in court on charges related to defamatory publications concerning Major General Barry Ndiomu (Rtd), the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).
Mienpamo faced a three-count charge, encompassing allegations of wilful libel, threats, causing danger, and insult against the PAP interim administrator. He pleaded not guilty to these charges, and the presiding Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja, ordered his remand in a correctional facility until the trial commences on December 4.
The Inspector-General (I-G) of Police is the complainant in the case, marked as FHC/ABJ/CR/492/23, with Mienpamo as the sole defendant. This application was dated October 13 and filed on October 16.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution counsel, N.O. Eleodimio, informed the court that the matter was scheduled for a plea, and they were prepared to proceed. However, Mienpamo entered a plea of not guilty to all the charges after they were presented.
Mienpamo’s attorney, Terungwa Ananbe, informed the court that a bail application had been submitted on Mienpamo’s behalf. Nevertheless, Justice Nwite stated that the application was not on record, and as such, he could not consider an application he had not seen. Consequently, the case was adjourned until December 4 for trial.
One of the counts against Mienpamo accuses him of disseminating a message or post via his Facebook page, ‘Mienpamo Onitsha Saint,’ which he knew to be false, intending to cause annoyance, inconvenience, danger, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, ill-will, and unnecessary anxiety to Maj-Gen. Ndiomu (Retd). This offense falls under Section 24 (1) (b) of the cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.
