The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, has denied that its members were paid.
The organization stated in a statement signed by the union’s Chairman and Acting Secretary, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele and Dr. William Odion, that the reported payment of all pending salaries of university workers was false.
It was claimed that the institution’s management uses selective payment.
“The university administration has adopted the practice of selectively paying monthly salaries in order to instill hunger, misery, and irritation in many staff and complicate the salary saga.”
“The reality in AAU, Ekpoma as of today Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is a wide spread restiveness, worry, and sorrow as a result of a wicked continuation of selective payment of salary to some staff by the university administration,” according to a statement made available to journalists in Benin on Tuesday.
“It is incorrect that all arrears of salary for university employees have been paid. It is only a rumor designed to deceive and confuse the general public about the university’s ongoing salary crisis.
“Many University staff, notably more than 50% of ASUU members, have been purposefully withheld salary payment by the university management for categories of months (January – December 2022 and January 2023), for no reason.”
“While the February 2023 staff salary has been paid, the previous pattern of selective salary payment remains. Various University staff (both academic and non-academic) have complained about being overlooked in the payment schedule.”
It claimed that the selective salary payment of staff is purposely planned by the government to unjustly penalize particular staff viewed as being their “enemies”.
“Staff cooperative societies and saving plans have also suffered difficulties owing to non-remittance of deductions to the applicable beneficiaries for 27 months,” it said.
