Anambra State Police Command operatives stormed a hotel on Monday and rescued nine underage girls who were being used as sex workers.
The girls, who are said to be between the ages of 15 and 23, were taken away from the hotel, while the brothel’s owner was arrested.
In a statement issued on Monday, the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the operation on the Awka-based hotel was carried out in response to valid information from the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.
Ikenga assured that the rescued girls found in the brothel will be rehabilitated before being repatriated to their various states.
He said that the girls were lured to Awka from Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states by the brothel’s proprietor, who promised to give them additional money to send to their parents in the village.
“Following information received from the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare on Sunday at 6:00pm, police operatives stormed a hotel in Awka and rescued nine girls aged 15 to 23 years, used as sex workers, and arrested the proprietor of the hotel,” Ikenga said.
