Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered immediate imposition of curfew on Irepodun and Orolu local government areas of Osun State. This decision follows the recent tragic killing of a farmer named Sodiq Alamu in Opapa village, located in Irepodun LGA.
Additionally, tensions have escalated between the Ilobu and Ifon communities due to a land dispute that involves a parcel of land situated between both areas.
Local residents of Ifon have alleged that Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who hails from Ilobu and serves as the Chief of Army Staff, is using his influence to forcibly acquire the disputed land. It’s important to note that the army chief has denied these allegations.
The announcement of the curfew was made by Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, in a statement issued on Sunday. The purpose of this curfew is to restore law and order in the affected communities.
The statement reads: “We wish to inform the public that the Osun state government has been made aware of the ongoing communal clash over a land dispute between the Ilobu and Ifon communities. Consequently, Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the immediate imposition of a curfew in the two local government areas: Orolu and Irepodun.
The curfew will be in effect from 8pm to 6am, during which time both human and vehicular movements will be restricted until further notice. This measure aims to prevent any potential loss of life or property resulting from the land dispute.
Anyone found moving or wandering in the Irepodun and Orolu local government areas during the curfew period will be subject to arrest and appropriate legal action. Governor Ademola Adeleke appeals for peace and encourages both local governments to embrace the values of peace, love, and unity that Osun State is known for.”
