Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, the Acting Inspector-General of Police (I-G), presented a total of N1.3 billion in checks to 420 families of police officers who lost their lives while on active duty.
Egbetokun explained that these checks covered the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 policy periods under the Group Life Assurance policy of the police. He also mentioned that the presentation included the I-G’s Family Welfare Insurance Scheme.
He went on to clarify that the Group Life Assurance scheme is a welfare initiative that was established as a result of amendments to the 2004 Pension Reform Act in 2014. Egbetokun emphasized that this welfare program is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Furthermore, he discussed the I-G Family Welfare Insurance Scheme, which was introduced by the Nigeria Police Force in 2017. This scheme was designed to alleviate the financial challenges faced by the immediate families of deceased officers before their death benefits become available.
Egbetokun stressed the Nigeria Police Force’s strong belief in the inherent value of every human life and their commitment to promptly fulfilling obligations, including providing insurance and other benefits to officers and their families who have made significant sacrifices. He expressed that this tangible support not only boosts the morale of officers and personnel but also underscores the force’s unwavering dedication to their welfare and that of their families.
The Acting I-G pledged the leadership’s determination to further enhance welfare packages for all members of the Police family, regardless of their status, including serving officers, retirees, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The ultimate goal is to establish a robust welfare system that strengthens the bonds within the police community and ensures that every officer feels valued, protected, and motivated to give their best in the service of the nation.
Egbetokun concluded by offering his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased officers, acknowledging that no amount of financial support can fill the void left by their loved ones. He encouraged them to wisely utilize the funds to address their needs and financial challenges, particularly concerning their stability.
