The Abia State Government has announced the declaration of a state of emergency in six crucial sectors of the state. Following the state Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, highlighted these sectors as security, education, infrastructure, investment, climate change, and pensions payment.
In response to the security challenges, the state government has devised “Operation Crush” as a strategic plan to address insecurity in the state. Additionally, the government has approved the “Lighting Up Abia Initiative,” which aims to illuminate the major streets in Umuahia, Aba, and other cities. As part of this initiative, overgrown bushes along the expressway median lane from Okigwe gate into the state will be cleared, and street lights will be installed to enhance safety.
To prioritize education, the government has established the “Reclaim Our Schools Initiative,” which seeks financial support from influential individuals, stakeholders, and international agencies to fund education from primary to tertiary levels in the state.
Furthermore, the state is planning to hold its first-ever climate change summit, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing environmental issues. Additionally, the traditional rulers’ allowances have been increased from 3% to 5%, with payments set to begin next week, and the government is dedicated to settling outstanding pension arrears.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eme, expressed concerns about the deteriorating state of schools in Abia and revealed plans to build new primary and secondary schools in each local government. Under a community-based initiative, host communities will be involved in securing these schools.
The Secretary to the State Government, Caleb Ajagba, emphasized the government’s determination to standardize every school in the state, while the Commissioner for Environment and Urban Renewal, Philemon Ogbonna, lamented the past governments’ lack of attention to climate change. He praised Governor Otti’s commitment to involving all stakeholders in tackling this critical issue.
