A 24-year-old labourer named Sunday Clement has been placed in Olokuta Correctional Centre by the Akure Chief Magistrate Court on charges of allegedly killing a 30-year-old farmer named Taye Alatoye. The incident is said to have occurred on September 4, 2023, at approximately 2:30 pm at Baba Odun Camp in the Ofosu area of the Odigbo Local Government Area in the state.
Clement, who admitted to being under the influence of illicit drugs at the time, reportedly assaulted Alatoye while they were en route to their farm. Subsequently, law enforcement authorities apprehended Clement and charged him with a single count of murder.
The police prosecutor, Mary Adebayo, brought to the court’s attention that the defendant’s actions contravene Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. II Law of Ondo State, 2006.
During the hearing for Clement’s detention, Adebayo requested that the court keep the defendant in the Olokuta Correctional Centre until receiving guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.
While expressing remorse, the defendant informed the court that on the day of the incident, he had consumed a substance known as crystal methamphetamine, commonly referred to as ‘ice,’ before heading to the farm.
Chief Magistrate Folasade Aduroja, citing a lack of jurisdiction, did not accept Clement’s plea. In compliance with the prosecutor’s request, Aduroja ordered the defendant’s remand in the custodial centre and directed that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the DPP for legal advice.”
