The former coach of the Dutch national team, Louis Van Gaal, has asserted that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was ‘premeditated’ to help Lionel Messi and Argentina in their quest to win the tournament.
During his third tenure as the Netherlands’ coach, Van Gaal presided over their quarterfinal match against Argentina, which Argentina won 4-3 on penalties. Expressing his viewpoint at the Eredivisie awards on Tuesday night, the 72-year-old stated to the Dutch outlet NOS that the tournament was made for the Argentine team.
Van Gaal remarked, “I’d prefer not to elaborate extensively on this matter. When you observe how Argentina scored their goals compared to our goals, and how certain Argentine players overstepped the mark and were not punished, it appears that the entire tournament was carefully planned.”
He further emphasized his belief, stating, “I stand by my words. Do I think Messi was intended to become the world champion? Yes, I do.”
In the finals, Messi netted two goals as Argentina triumphed 4-2 on penalties against France.
