A supermarket in Austria has been cleared out due to a reported sighting of a spider that is rumoured to have a unique impact on men’s physiology. The Penny store, located in Krems an der Donau, around 45 miles west of Vienna, has been closed since Tuesday after the store manager claimed to have spotted a banana-loving spider with the potential to cause long-lasting erections.
This particular type of spider, suspected to be a Brazilian Wandering Spider, is known to sometimes hide in bunches of bananas and make its way to Europe. Due to concerns about the four-inch black and red spider, emergency services were summoned. An exterminator was called in, and the crates of bananas in the store were sealed. However, the shop is expected to remain closed until the following week.
Authorities believe that the size and coloring of the spider, which couldn’t be immediately identified, point to it being a Brazilian Wandering Spider. This spider is known for emitting a potent neurotoxin and is considered one of the world’s most venomous spiders. Its bites can cause severe effects including hypothermia, blurred vision, convulsions, and, interestingly, in certain cases, erections. In fact, the venom of this spider has been studied for its potential use in treating erectile dysfunction, as its bite can result in a prolonged, painful erection lasting up to four hours.
Despite an extensive search, no spiders have been located thus far. The supermarket chain, Rewe, to which the store belongs, has initiated comprehensive cleaning and disinfection procedures in preparation for the store’s reopening.
