The Ondo State Police have officially confirmed the abduction of some Christian worshippers who were travelling to a burial program. This unfortunate incident took place in the Ifon area of the Ose Local Government Area of the state. The victims, all members of the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Igan, Akure, which is the state capital, were kidnapped by unknown gunmen.
SP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Police Spokesperson in the state, verified the abduction in a statement released on Saturday, indicating that the worshippers were taken on Friday afternoon.
She stated, “Yesterday afternoon, the police were informed that a church bus with the inscription CAC was abandoned around Elegbeka area and there are suspicions that the passengers in the vehicle were kidnapped. The Police Anti-kidnapping squad and other tactical teams have been deployed to the area to rescue the victims and arrest all involved in the crime.”
A family member of one of the abductees, who requested anonymity, revealed that the worshippers were kidnapped at Elegbeka, shortly after passing through Ifon in the Ose council area while they were on their way to a burial ceremony.
The situation along the Owo-Ifon route has been particularly troublesome for motorists due to recurring incidents of kidnapping and armed robbery, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
