Only persons below 18 will be issued birth certificate, says NPC

NPC

The National Population Commission (NPC) has clarified that birth certificates will not be issued to individuals who are older than 18 years. Mr. Akin Oyetunde, the State Director of NPC in Oyo State, conveyed this information to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ibadan, citing the provisions of the Birth and Death Act of 1992.

According to Oyetunde, the NPC operates in accordance with the Act from 1992, and therefore, individuals born before that year will not receive a traditional birth certificate. Instead, those born before 1992 and individuals over 18 years old will be provided with an Attestation of Birth. However, individuals below 18 years old will continue to receive birth certificates from the commission.

The director emphasized that all local governments in the state have designated birth and death registration centres. Each local government is equipped with at least three registration centres, and the certificates issued at these centres are standardized and universally accepted.

Addressing the postponed National Population and Housing Census initially scheduled for 2023, Oyetunde stated that all necessary preparations had been made for the exercise.

He assured that everything was in place, with materials already distributed to local governments, and the personnel required for the census had undergone training. The director mentioned that the only remaining step was for the federal government to give the go-ahead for the census to commence.
