Nigerian govt announces commencement of ban on sackets alcoholic drinks

Mojisola Adeyeye 1

The Nigerian federal government has declared its intention to enforce the prohibition of alcoholic beverages manufactured in sachets less than 200ml, commencing from February 1, 2024. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), conveyed this announcement in a recent statement.

Adeyeye clarified that the deadline for manufacturers to discontinue the production of these drinks in sachets and PET bottles, initially established in 2018, officially expired on January 31, 2024. She explained that this decision stemmed from the recommendation of a high-powered committee consisting of the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and industry representatives such as the Association of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employers (AFBTE) and the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN), made in December 2018.

In adherence to the decision reached during the committee meeting, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volumes had agreed to a 5% reduction in production starting from January 31, 2022. The ultimate goal was to completely phase out such products in the country by January 31, 2024, as part of their commitment to the decision.
