Nigerian Comedienne, Helen Paul narrates stigma of being born of rape

Renowned Nigerian comedienne, Helen Paul, has shared the story of how she triumphed over the societal stigma she encountered while growing up.

In a viral clip on social media, Helen Paul had disclosed a few years ago that she was born out of rape. She recounted the challenges she faced, including being labelled a “bastard” by some family members who doubted her potential for success.

“Some of us struggle with rejection, not realizing the lasting impact our words can have on someone. In my case, it worked differently. I was born out of rape and raised by my grandmother in an environment where everyone referred to me as a bastard. The term ‘bastard’ became ingrained in my identity.

“When my aunties visited and contributed money for our upkeep, they would explicitly instruct my grandmother not to use the funds on ‘that illegitimate child’ but to prioritize herself and buy her medicine.

“After their departure, my grandmother would turn to me and in pidgin say, ‘Did you hear what your aunties said? This is how the world is. Those who should be your mother’s blood have disowned you. Even if you grow up and accomplish something, nobody will celebrate you.’

“Despite these hardships, I realized that if I upset my grandmother, she refrained from physical discipline due to warnings from others. Can you imagine a child growing up amid such hurtful remarks?

“Yet, today, I stand as a successful comedian in Nigeria and hold the esteemed title of a professor in the United States.”
