President Bola Tinubu, who serves as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has emphasized the commitment of the regional organization to safeguarding democracy and human rights within Niger Republic.
In accordance with the stance of the Nigerian President, ECOWAS must engage with the leaders of the coup in the neighboring nation to facilitate the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum.
Tinubu conveyed these sentiments on Thursday in Abuja during his opening speech at the ECOWAS second extraordinary session focused on the situation unfolding in Niger Republic.
He expressed, “Furthermore, as we reaffirm our unwavering dedication to upholding democracy, safeguarding human rights, and prioritizing the well-being of the Nigerien people, it is essential that we give paramount importance to diplomatic negotiations and constructive dialogues as the foundation of our strategy.”
Tinubu emphasized, “We must initiate earnest discussions with all involved parties, including the coup leaders, with the intention of persuading them to relinquish control and reinstate President Bazoum. It falls upon us to exhaust all possibilities for engagement, aiming for a prompt return to constitutional governance in Niger.”
Tinubu underlined the broader implications of the coup in Niger for democratically elected administrations across the sub-region. He stated, “More precisely, as leaders of our respective nations, we must acknowledge that the political turmoil in Niger not only jeopardizes the nation’s stability but also has wide-ranging consequences for the entire West African region.”
He concluded by asserting, “By remaining unwavering in our adherence to the values of democracy, effective governance, and the rule of law, we can reinstate tranquility, stability, and prosperity in the Republic of Niger. This will, in turn, foster an environment conducive to comprehensive growth and development for all.”
