The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Wednesday, provided free surgical intervention to 14 patients at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH). As part of the NARD 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM), themed “The Emirate Experience,” the organization also made generous donations, including financial supports.
During the surgical outreach, Dr. Emeka Orji, the National President of NARD, emphasized the association’s annual commitment to providing free medical services and support to disadvantaged individuals throughout the country. He clarified that the primary aim of this outreach program is to assist indigent individuals who require medical attention or are facing health challenges. Dr. Orji also highlighted that this initiative is a crucial aspect of the association’s social responsibility, demonstrating their commitment to giving back to society.
Dr. Orji emphasized that NARD’s activities should not be solely associated with strike actions; they have consistently taken the lead in identifying with the less privileged through their free medical outreach and support programs. Additionally, some hospitalized patients at UITH received monetary donations to help cover their essential needs.
Dr. Remi Solagbade, a member of the Department of Surgery at UITH and coordinator of the outreach program, explained that the 14 beneficiaries had diverse surgical conditions, including hernias, glaucoma, and other surgical requirements. Furthermore, in-patients at the Emergency and Accident Unit received financial assistance to aid in their recovery process.
Professor Bilyaminu Asayomi, the Acting Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) at UITH, commended NARD for their admirable and compassionate efforts. He expressed appreciation for the doctors’ fantastic work in reaching out to disadvantaged members of society and providing them with free medical care.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Joshua Durojaiye, expressed his gratitude for the life-saving intervention and praised the doctors for their exceptional care. He encouraged them to continue and expand the scope of their humanitarian programs.
In addition to the surgical interventions and donations at UITH, the event also included visits to the School for the Special Needs in Ilorin, where NARD donated food items and medical supplies. (NAN)
