The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has given approval for the implementation of a new retirement age and length of service for all categories of teachers in the state. The announcement was made in a press statement on Friday, which was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, and released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi.
According to the statement, the Governor has endorsed the adoption of the new retirement age and length of service as recognized by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). The circular outlining these changes was signed by the State’s Head of Service, Dr Ogbogbo Ode, and the implementation process will be backdated to May 2023.
The decision to implement this new retirement age and length of service stems from the enactment of the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers by the Benue State House of Assembly, which was signed into law by the previous administration.
Under the newly approved guidelines, the retirement age for teachers will be 65 years, and they can serve for a maximum of 40 years, whichever comes first. This applies to all Education officers and Teachers, without any boundaries or exceptions.
However, those teachers who are not interested in continuing under the elongation schemes can choose to apply for retirement from the service, following the existing Public Service Rules.
The statement further clarifies that the Harmonized Retirement Age Law 2023 holds precedence over any other guidelines pertaining to the subject.
