In their World Cup debut, Morocco secured a 1-0 victory over Colombia on Thursday, propelling them into the last 16 and eliminating two-time champions Germany in the process.

Morocco’s unexpected triumph in Perth earned them six points, securing the runners-up position in Group H, just behind Colombia on goal difference.

Germany’s journey in the tournament came to an end as they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Korea in Brisbane.

Colombia’s next challenge in the round of 16 will be against Jamaica, while Morocco is set to face France.

This remarkable outcome marks a fairy tale turnaround for Morocco, who bounced back from a humiliating 6-0 defeat in their debut match against Germany to claim victories over South Korea and Colombia.

The decisive moment occurred just before half-time when Ibtissam Jraidi was fouled in the box by Daniela Arias, resulting in a penalty kick. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak’s powerful attempt was excellently saved by goalkeeper Catalina Perez, but Sakina Ouzraoui quickly reacted to the rebound and provided a clever pass to Anissa Lahmari, who made no mistake in converting from close range.

Despite already qualifying for the last 16, Colombia fielded a full-strength team for the game, wearing their iconic yellow shirts.
