Three groups staged polls at three distinct places around the state, leading to uncertainty in the Labour Party’s (LP) governorship primary that was held yesterday in Imo State.
According to a trustworthy source who spoke to Sunday Sun, four other candidates had their own parallel polls along MCC Road, Uratta, also in Owerri, the state capital, while nine other candidates chose to hold their election at the Landmark Event Centre in New Owerri with their delegates.
According to the source, the nine individuals who formed one side included Martin Agbaso, Tochi Ehirim, Kelechi Nwagwu, Chinedu Amadi, Charles Agomuo, Sam Amadi, David Mbamara, Major General Lincoln Ogunewe (rtd), and Chief C. Ishiguzo.
Senator Athan Achonu, Ike Ibe, and Ikechukwu Joseph Ukaegbu are the others.
Along MCC Road in Owerri, another faction headed by Basil Maduka also held elections.
Election results that were observed by our correspondent at MCC Road were inconclusive since the electoral officers could only finish the accreditation procedure, delaying the primary election until today, Sunday.
The election at Landmark, which got underway quite late, was the same.
According to a trustworthy source who spoke to Sunday Sun, the Independent National Commission (INEC) and the National Working Committee of the party, which is led by acting National Chairman of the party Lamido Apapa, had previously screened Ukaegbu, Ibe, and Achonu at the party office in Abuja, while the remaining aspirants who were unable to meet on the same day reportedly had their screening at a private office in Abuja.
The insider further said that due to Ukaegbu’s tenure in the party and his selfless contributions at the national and state levels, he is considered the favorite to win the primary election.
