The head of the House of Representatives Committee on Media and Publicity, Benjamin Kalu, has received backing from a coalition of civil society organizations in his attempt to become speaker of the House during the tenth parliament.
Chief Dominic Ogakwu, the national coordinator and leader of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance, stated during a news conference on Friday in Abuja that Kalu stands head and shoulders above all other candidates, particularly those from the South East, vying for the position of speaker.
Ogakwu emphasized the need to hand the speakership over to the South East in the interests of equity and fair play, but he also made note of the House spokesman’s extensive network and experience working in both the public and private sectors, which he would draw upon if elected speaker.
He claims that “Hon. Kalu has continued to work closely with the Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who will be leaving a legacy of a well-respected House of Reps. Hon. Kalu would work with the Senate and Executive to advance democratic ideals and the general welfare of all Nigerians via constructive supervision and engagement. He will also guarantee the independence of the House of Representatives as the people’s parliament.
Aiswaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate was freely and broadly granted to His Excellency, Hon. Kalu, who has remained a devoted party member and fought relentlessly for his election as President-elect.
In order to show our support for the Speaker Kalu Project’s implementation, he continued, “we are organizing youngsters from all geopolitical zones to push and mobilize their contacts and power in this respect.
In order to advance our common goals and uphold the principles of equality and balance, we are mobilizing resources and goodwill to help a member who has led by example, displayed honesty, and interacted with the media and his fellow parliamentarians successfully reach the position of Speaker.
